The most fun creative time ever: Painted Play!

Painted play makes great family creative time! It’s really does! This is because it is fun and can really nurture family creativity where everyone can share their unique selves.

My daughters and I are setting up for some painted play this morning. We have all our supplies out, ready to paint. Pretty sweet way to spend a Saturday and make some beautiful art!!! I love having my daughters paint and support my art.

Painted Play as Family Creative Time

You may not look at your painted play or love of creative expression as a regular practice just yet, but believe me, it can easily become just that! And not only can it become a rewarding practice, but it can become a family creative practice too.

My daughters and I love to play with paint together! It makes it twice as much fun and twice as rewarding. I love that I am able to teach my girls that they can be who they are and can share themselves through their art!

And you can be just as successful in your painted play family creative time too!

Always Have Fun

One huge point to remember is that you should always have fun when you are creating. Don’t be hard on yourself!

Playing with paint is about letting go and requires giving yourself permission to have fun and make a mess. This means that you should always be good to yourself.

Another important thing to remember is that you need to keep painting – even when things get messy (such as adding another layer on top of color!).

The trick is to keep playing as you layer but also make sure that you are still playing even when things get messy. Having fun throughout the process is essential!

Keep the Family Creative Time Rewarding

One of the best parts of spending time creating together is that everyone gets to express themselves. Don’t stifle your family’s creativity. Make sure that everyone is creating what they feel called to create!

I also highly recommend inviting young children to the art table. Bailey and Zoe have been creating alongside me since they were in diapers, and they both still love to do so. So, try to make creating together with your family a fun experience and something that everyone can enjoy and continue to build confidence with.

One way you can do this is by trying to limit any ‘do it my way’ or here’s how it’s done by laying out the supplies and making sure everyone feels encouraged to use what they feel called to create with. Providing encouragement, both positive and supportive, is key!

Get the Family Involved

This is family creative time because it involves your family, and that is the best part! (Aside from the fact that you can create beautiful art together while having fun.) Don’t be afraid to get everyone involved, no matter how big or small they may be.

As I said earlier, Bailey and Zoe were creating and playing with me when they were in diapers! Now Bailey is in college and Zoe is in high school, and they both make art with me! Even the youngest children can create something, whether that be finger painted abstracts, stick figure people, or showing mommy how to throw down the glitter with abandon!

Getting everyone involved and having fun together is the highlight of being able to make time doing what you love. And don’t forget to acknowledge everyone! Inviting everyone to share what they made not only gives them a sense of accomplishment at a young age, but it validates who they are and what they express through their art.
